What helps with bloating, and what can a supplement lawfully say?

If you often feel bloated, the likely cause is gas in the gut, and what helps is not a supplement: smaller meals eaten slowly, regular exercise, water, fewer fizzy drinks, and checking for constipation or a food intolerance. No UK-authorised health claim covers bloating, so no supplement may claim to relieve it. VH Life makes no such claim.

Updated Checked against the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register (19 May 2026 edition)

What causes bloating?

The NHS lists gas from food and fizzy drinks, swallowed air, constipation, food intolerance, coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome. See a GP if bloating does not go away, or comes with pain, weight loss, blood in your stool or a change in bowel habit.

What does the NHS say helps?

  • Eat smaller meals, slowly.
  • Exercise regularly and drink plenty of water.
  • Eat more soluble fibre, such as oats, if you are constipated.
  • Cut back on fizzy drinks, alcohol and foods that give you gas.

Can a supplement claim to help with bloating?

No. A supplement may only make health claims on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register, and none covers bloating. Probiotics, enzyme blends, ginger and "debloat" teas have no authorised claim. The nearest claims are narrower: calcium for digestive enzymes, lactase for lactose digestion, and activated charcoal for flatulence after eating. VH Life contains calcium at claim level.

What in VH Life carries an authorised claim?

The digestive enzymes and live cultures in VH Life have no authorised GB claim, so we make none.

Bloating: common questions

  • Do probiotics help with bloating?
In Great Britain no probiotic health claim is authorised, so no product can lawfully make one. VH Life contains three live cultures and we make no claim for them.
  • Can a greens powder make bloating worse?
Sometimes, for the first week or two: VH Life, like many greens powders, contains fermentable fibre (agave inulin). Take half a sachet with a meal for a few days, in the full 250 to 500ml of water. VH Life contains no sugar alcohols.
