Which vitamins and minerals support normal immune function?

In Great Britain ten nutrients may claim to contribute to the normal function of the immune system: vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D and folate, plus zinc, selenium, copper and iron. No product may claim to boost immunity or prevent colds. A VH Life sachet provides nine of the ten at claim level; it contains no iron.

Updated Checked against the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register (19 May 2026 edition)

What does "supports the immune system" mean on a label?

It means a serving gives at least 15% of the reference value of a nutrient that contributes to the normal function of the immune system. The key word is normal: the nutrient helps the immune system work as it should, not harder.

Is there an immune claim for exercise?

Yes, for vitamin C only: it "contributes to maintain the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise". The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 200mg in addition to the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.

What in VH Life carries an authorised claim?

Elderberry and the mushroom extracts in VH Life have no authorised GB immune claim, so we make none.

Immune function: common questions

  • Does VH Life boost the immune system?
No product may lawfully claim that in the UK, and we don't. Nine of its nutrients carry the claim that they contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
  • Do I need to take vitamin D as well?
No. One sachet gives 62.5µg (2,500 IU), more than the 10µg a day the NHS advises from October to March. Speak to a pharmacist before adding more: the NHS upper limit for adults is 100µg a day.
  • Is 900mg of vitamin C too much?
The NHS says more than 1,000mg a day can cause stomach pain and diarrhoea. VH Life gives 900mg, so count any other vitamin C you take.
