What 400 low-star reviews of AG1 and IM8 say buyers actually care about

AG1 and IM8 are the two biggest names in all-in-one daily powders, and both are well reviewed overall: on 28 September 2026 AG1 had 2,970 Trustpilot reviews at 4.4 and IM8 had 1,977 at 4.5. Averages hide the useful part, though. We read the 200 lowest-rated reviews of each, plus the Google reviews of five well-known UK supplement sellers, to see what people who were unhappy were actually unhappy about. It was rarely the ingredients.
This is not a hit piece. Both brands have thousands of happy customers and VH Life is a smaller company that competes with them. But if you're about to spend £79 or more a month on a powder, the complaints of people who did are worth ten minutes.
The eight complaints that dominated
1. Delivery that didn't happen
By far the largest group. AG1's European reviews from December 2025 onwards are full of orders stuck on "Preparing" for weeks after a fulfilment partner change, with money taken on day one. IM8 reviewers describe parcels routed via Germany, returned to sender, or left in public post-office areas. What to check: where the brand ships from, whether "shipped" means a label or a parcel, and whether there is a human to chase.
2. Subscriptions that charged after cancelling
Both brands sell primarily on subscription, and both have a run of reviews about charges after a cancellation or pause and three-month packs billed without a reminder; one IM8 reviewer describes an "and upgrade" option under the order button that added a second product. What to check: the cancellation cut-off, whether you get a reminder email before each charge, and whether you can buy one box with nothing recurring.
3. Taste
"Too sweet", "pineapple and matcha", "chemical", "bitter", "gag". Taste is personal, and both brands also have fans of the flavour, but the volume of complaints is high enough to matter. What to check: is there a small trial size so you don't commit a month's supply to a flavour you've never tried?
4. Money-back guarantees that weren't
Several reviewers bought on the strength of a 90-day guarantee and found it was 30 days in the UK and EU, or excluded opened product, or wasn't honoured. What to check: read the returns page, not the banner, and note that UK law lets brands refuse opened supplements, so "try before you commit" has to mean a small size, not a refund.
5. Stomach upset
Bloating, cramps and diarrhoea in the first weeks, from both brands. This is usually fibre, dose and drinking on an empty stomach, and we've written a whole piece on why greens powders can make you feel sick. A few AG1 reviewers raised concerns about liver enzymes and ashwagandha; that is a conversation for your GP, and it applies to any product containing ashwagandha, VH Life included.
6. "No difference after three months"
A steady stream from both. This one is partly the brands' fault for the marketing and partly expectation. A supplement tops up nutrients; it isn't a stimulant and it isn't a treatment. Our honest timeline is here.
7. Price
"£79 for a month of powder", "$90 for greens", "it costs €10 to make". Whatever you think of the margins, price per serving is the number to compare, and it should include what happens after the introductory offer ends.
8. Packaging and format
Too much cardboard, a missing scoop, a pouch that arrived split, and "you can't buy it in a shop". Across the wider set of UK reviews, tubs that arrive half empty by volume come up too. Individually sealed sachets solve most of this, at the cost of a little more packaging per serving.
How VH Life answers each one
- Delivery: dispatched from the UK the same working day for orders before 3pm, free UK shipping on every order, tracking when it ships, and a replacement or refund if it hasn't arrived within seven working days of dispatch.
- Subscription: optional. One box is £34.99 with nothing recurring. The subscription (two boxes, 28 sachets, £49.99 every four weeks) has no minimum term and can be paused or cancelled before the next billing date from your account. There is no upsell under the order button.
- Taste: a light berry drink sweetened with steviol glycosides, and a 7-sachet trial at £12.99 so you find out before you buy a box.
- Returns: unopened boxes back within 30 days, faulty or damaged orders replaced including postage. We say plainly that opened boxes can't come back, which is why the trial exists.
- Stomach: no sugar alcohols, no caffeine, no iron. It does contain fibre, enzymes and live cultures, so start with half a sachet with food if you're sensitive.
- Price: £2.50 a serving for one box, £1.79 a serving on subscription, against AG1's £2.63 on its standard UK plan (prices checked 9 September 2026; full table in our price comparison).
- Format: 14 sealed 11.8g sachets a box. No scoop to lose, no tub to settle, no guessing the dose.
- Ingredients: 87 actives with the vitamins and minerals declared with amounts and NRVs, and every ingredient named. See the AG1 alternatives and IM8 alternatives comparisons for the eleven-brand table.
What we can't claim
We can't claim VH Life works better than either brand, because "works" isn't a lawful claim for any of us. The authorised claims VH Life carries are listed on the product page, nutrient by nutrient. Where the big brands are ahead is scale, celebrity endorsement and, for AG1, published research on its own formula. Where a small UK brand can win is on the boring stuff the reviews are about: the parcel turns up, a person answers, and nobody gets charged for something they cancelled.
Method: 200 lowest-rated Trustpilot reviews of drinkag1.com and of im8health.com, all languages, read on 28 September 2026, plus Google Business Profile reviews of Protein Works, Bulk, Wild Nutrition, Rheal and Symprove. Counts are approximate. Reviews are individual experiences and not verified by us.
