Why do greens powders make some people feel sick, and how do you avoid it?

Read enough reviews of greens and all-in-one powders and one complaint keeps coming back: "it made me feel sick". Sometimes it's mild queasiness ten minutes after drinking it. Sometimes it's a properly upset stomach. It is real, it is common, and in most cases it has an ordinary cause that you can do something about.
The usual causes
Drinking it on an empty stomach
Most people take their powder first thing, before food, in one go. That is a concentrated dose of plant powders, minerals and sometimes vitamins hitting an empty stomach. Vitamin C in gram doses and zinc in particular are known for causing nausea when taken without food. If the sick feeling arrives within half an hour and fades by mid-morning, this is the likely reason.
Fermentable fibre
Greens powders usually include a prebiotic fibre such as inulin. It feeds gut bacteria, which is the point, but bacteria fermenting fibre produce gas. For the first week or two some people get bloating, wind or a loose stomach while the gut adjusts. This is dose-dependent: more fibre, more gas.
Sugar alcohols
"Sugar-free" powders are often sweetened with sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol or erythritol. Sugar alcohols are poorly absorbed and are a well-known cause of bloating, cramps and diarrhoea, especially in people with a sensitive gut. Check the ingredients list for anything ending in "-ol".
Too much, too fast
Jumping from nothing to a full daily serving of 80-odd ingredients is a lot to ask of your digestion in one morning. Bodies prefer a ramp.
Something you react to
Less common but important: a genuine intolerance or allergy to an individual ingredient. Greens powders can contain dozens of botanicals, algae, mushrooms and fruit powders. If you get hives, swelling, wheezing or vomiting, stop immediately and seek medical help. That is not an adjustment period.
What to change
- Take it with food, not before it. Breakfast first, then the drink, or drink it alongside.
- Use the full amount of water. VH Life is designed for 250 to 500ml. More water, less concentration, gentler on the stomach.
- Start with half a sachet for three or four days. Then move to a full one. This alone fixes most first-week gas.
- Drink it slowly. Over ten minutes, not ten seconds.
- Move it to later in the day if mornings are the problem.
What we did about it in VH Life
VH Life is sweetened with steviol glycosides, not sugar alcohols, so that common cause is off the list. It contains no caffeine and no iron, two ingredients that cause nausea for a lot of people. It does contain agave inulin, five digestive enzymes and three live cultures, so the first-week adjustment described above can happen. The advice on the box is 250 to 500ml of water, and we'd add: half a sachet with food for the first few days if your stomach is sensitive.
Calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes, and a sachet provides 20.5% of the calcium NRV. That is the only authorised digestion claim we can make, and we make no claim for the enzymes or live cultures themselves, because none is authorised in Great Britain.
When to stop
If nausea or stomach upset continues past two weeks at a full serving with food and water, the product isn't right for you. Stop. If you ever get an allergic-type reaction, stop and seek medical advice. And if you have a diagnosed gut condition, ask your GP or dietitian before adding any powder to your routine.
If bloating is your main concern, read our guide on what helps with bloating, or the wider one on what supports gut health.
