Can you return an opened supplement in the UK? The rules, and how to avoid needing to

"Once the packet is opened it cannot be returned, so the guarantee is worthless." That line, or something like it, appears under every supplement brand with more than a few hundred reviews. It's worth explaining why, because the answer is not "brands are mean". It's the law, and it changes how you should shop.
What the rules say
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you normally have 14 days to change your mind about anything bought online. But there is a specific exemption for "sealed goods which are not suitable for return due to health protection or hygiene reasons, if they become unsealed after delivery". Food supplements, like cosmetics and underwear, fall squarely into it. Once a box is opened, a seller cannot resell it and is not obliged to take it back.
That is separate from your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. If the product is faulty, damaged, not as described or not of satisfactory quality, you are entitled to a refund, repair or replacement, opened or not. "It arrived split and the powder was everywhere" or "the batch smells wrong" are faults. "I didn't like the taste" is not.
Why "money-back guarantees" often disappoint
Some brands advertise a lifetime or satisfaction guarantee, then apply it only to unopened stock or make you pay return postage on a 2.5kg bag. Read the guarantee page, not the banner. Look for: does it cover opened products, who pays postage, how long refunds take (10 to 14 days to the original payment method is normal; longer is not), and whether you get a refund or only store credit.
The VH Life policy, in plain words
- Unopened boxes: return within 30 days of delivery for a full refund of the product price. Return postage is yours unless the item is faulty.
- Opened boxes or used sachets: not returnable, for the hygiene reason above.
- Damaged, faulty or wrong orders: tell us within 30 days and we replace or refund in full, including your return postage.
- Refund timing: to the original payment method within 14 days of us receiving the return.
- How: email info@vhlifelongevity.com with your order number.
How to avoid needing a return
This is the useful bit. Since opened supplements can't come back, don't buy a month's worth of something you've never tasted. Buy the smallest size first. For VH Life that is the 7-sachet trial at £12.99, one per customer, nothing recurring. A week is long enough to know whether you like the taste, whether your stomach is happy with it, and whether the morning routine sticks. Then buy a box, or don't.
Two more habits that save money: check the ingredients list for anything you know you react to before ordering, and if you're on medication, ask your pharmacist first. Nobody enjoys a £35 box sitting unused because of something a two-minute check would have caught.
