What is the best supplement for the thyroid?

Iodine and selenium are the two with an authorised claim. Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function; selenium contributes to the normal thyroid function. A VH Life sachet provides 150µg of iodine (100% NRV) from seaweed extract and 70µg of selenium (127% NRV). If you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medicine, ask your doctor before taking extra iodine, and note that VH Life's 1,000µg of biotin can interfere with thyroid blood tests.

What does the NHS say?

The NHS says adults need 140µg of iodine a day, that most people should get enough from a varied and balanced diet, and that taking 0.5mg (500µg) or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. Source: NHS: Iodine.

Which authorised claims come closest?

In Great Britain a food or supplement may only make health claims that are on the GB register, worded as registered, for nutrients at 15% of the NRV or more per portion. These are the registered claims that touch this question and apply to VH Life:

Authorised GB claims on this topic that apply to a VH Life sachet, 19 May 2026 edition
Nutrient, in one sachet Authorised claim, as registered
Iodine, 150µg, 100% NRV Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function
Selenium, 70µg, 127% NRV Selenium contributes to the normal thyroid function

Health claims apply as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle; the pattern of use is one sachet a day.

Where does VH Life fit?

VH Life is a UK-made food supplement: one 11.8g berry sachet a day in cold water, with 87 active ingredients including 26 vitamins and minerals with declared amounts. It carries the claims above because it provides those nutrients at qualifying levels; it makes no claim beyond them. On subscription VH Life is £49.99 for 28 sachets every 4 weeks, which works out at £1.79 a day. There is also a 7-day trial (7 sachets, £12.99, one per customer) and one box of 14 sachets for £34.99, with free UK delivery. See the full label or the ingredients index.

If you take any medicine, ask your GP or pharmacist first. If you take warfarin, ask your anticoagulant clinic first: the sachet contains vitamin K, cranberry, co-enzyme Q10, ginkgo, turmeric and ginseng.

Questions people also ask

Can I take VH Life with levothyroxine?

Ask your GP or pharmacist first. Iodine intake matters with thyroid conditions, and biotin at 1,000µg can distort thyroid function test results, so tell whoever takes your blood that you take it.

Is sea moss good for the thyroid?

Sea moss is a seaweed and contains iodine, but it has no authorised GB health claim. VH Life's iodine is declared at 150µg per sachet, which carries the iodine claims; the sea moss itself carries none.

Does selenium support the thyroid?

The authorised wording is that selenium contributes to the normal thyroid function. A VH Life sachet provides 70µg, 127% of the NRV.
