What is the best supplement for constipation?

Fibre, fluid and moving more come first, says the NHS, then a pharmacist if that does not help. Authorised bowel claims belong to specific foods at set doses: chicory inulin contributes to normal bowel function by increasing stool frequency, at 12g a day, and lactulose contributes to an acceleration of intestinal transit, at 10g. VH Life is not a constipation product and makes no bowel claim.

What does the NHS say?

The NHS says the most common causes include not eating enough fibre, not drinking enough fluids and not moving enough, and to speak to a pharmacist if diet and lifestyle changes are not helping. Source: NHS: Constipation.

Where does VH Life fit?

VH Life is a UK-made food supplement: one 11.8g berry sachet a day in cold water, with 87 active ingredients including 26 vitamins and minerals with declared amounts. It carries no authorised claim on this topic. On subscription VH Life is £49.99 for 28 sachets every 4 weeks, which works out at £1.79 a day. There is also a 7-day trial (7 sachets, £12.99, one per customer) and one box of 14 sachets for £34.99, with free UK delivery. See the full label or the ingredients index.

If you take any medicine, ask your GP or pharmacist first. If you take warfarin, ask your anticoagulant clinic first: the sachet contains vitamin K, cranberry, co-enzyme Q10, ginkgo, turmeric and ginseng.

Questions people also ask

Does VH Life contain fibre?

The box names agave inulin, a fibre, without an amount. It carries no bowel claim. Agave inulin is not the chicory inulin the register's claim is written for.

Is magnesium good for constipation?

No magnesium claim on the GB register mentions constipation or bowel function.

How much fibre do I need?

The NHS says to aim for 30g a day from a variety of sources, and to keep drinking, because fibre absorbs water.
