What is the best supplement for gut health?

No supplement has an authorised gut health claim in Great Britain, so none may promise to improve it. The bowel claims belong to specific foods at set doses, such as chicory inulin at 12g a day. The NHS starting point is 30g of fibre a day and plenty of fluid. VH Life names live cultures, digestive enzymes and agave inulin on the box and makes no gut claim for them; calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes.

Updated . Written by Vita Hydra Life Ltd, the UK company that makes VH Life. Health claims checked against the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register (19 May 2026 edition).

What does the NHS say?

The NHS says most people in the UK do not get enough fibre, to aim for 30g a day from a variety of sources, to keep drinking, especially water, and to cut back on greasy fried foods. Source: NHS: Good foods to help your digestion.

What about probiotics?

The NHS says there is some evidence that probiotics may help in some cases, such as easing some symptoms of IBS, but little evidence for many claims made about them, and that little is known about which types are best. The GB register has no authorised gut claim for probiotic supplements; its live-culture claim is for yoghurt cultures and lactose digestion. See NHS: Probiotics.

Which authorised claims come closest?

In Great Britain a food or supplement may only make health claims that are on the GB register, worded as registered, for nutrients at 15% of the NRV or more per portion. These are the registered claims that touch this question and apply to VH Life:

Authorised GB claims on this topic that apply to a VH Life sachet, 19 May 2026 edition
Nutrient, in one sachet Authorised claim, as registered
Calcium, 164mg, 20.5% NRV Calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes

Health claims apply as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle; the pattern of use is one sachet a day.

Where does VH Life fit?

VH Life is a UK-made food supplement: one 11.8g berry sachet a day in cold water, with 87 active ingredients including 26 vitamins and minerals with declared amounts. It carries the claims above because it provides those nutrients at qualifying levels; it makes no claim beyond them. On subscription VH Life is £49.99 for 28 sachets every 4 weeks, which works out at £1.79 a day. There is also a 7-day trial (7 sachets, £12.99, one per customer) and one box of 14 sachets for £34.99, with free UK delivery. See the full label or the ingredients index.

If you take any medicine, ask your GP or pharmacist first. If you take warfarin, ask your anticoagulant clinic first: the sachet contains vitamin K, cranberry, co-enzyme Q10, ginkgo, turmeric and ginseng.

Questions people also ask

What live cultures are in VH Life?

The box names Lactobacillus casei at 1 billion CFU, and Weizmannia (Bacillus) coagulans with Bacillus subtilis in a complex of 1 billion CFU. No health claim is authorised for them, so VH Life makes none.

Is L-glutamine good for the gut?

L-glutamine has no authorised GB health claim. VH Life names it on the box without an amount and makes no claim for it.

What should I look for in a gut supplement?

Named strains with the CFU count printed, a clear dose, and no promise the register does not allow. Claims about the microbiome or gut healing are not authorised.
