What is the best supplement for bones?
Look at calcium and vitamin D first, which the NHS names for healthy bones. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones; vitamin D, vitamin K, magnesium, manganese and zinc each contribute to the maintenance of normal bones; vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones. A VH Life sachet provides all seven at levels that carry those claims, but its calcium is 164mg, about a fifth of the NRV, so it is not a calcium supplement. The NHS says adults need 700mg of calcium a day, mostly from food, and vitamin D in autumn and winter.
What does the NHS say?
The NHS says a balanced diet with enough calcium and vitamin D, regular weight-bearing exercise, not smoking and keeping alcohol within limits help keep bones healthy. Source: NHS: Osteoporosis prevention.
Which authorised claims come closest?
In Great Britain a food or supplement may only make health claims that are on the GB register, worded as registered, for nutrients at 15% of the NRV or more per portion. These are the registered claims that touch this question and apply to VH Life:
| Nutrient, in one sachet | Authorised claim, as registered |
|---|---|
| Calcium, 164mg, 20.5% NRV | Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones |
| Magnesium, 65mg, 17.3% NRV | Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones |
| Manganese, 3mg, 150% NRV | Manganese contributes to the maintenance of normal bones |
| Vitamin D, 62.5µg (2,500 IU), 1,250% NRV | Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones |
| Vitamin K, 30µg, 40% NRV | Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones |
| Zinc, 15mg, 150% NRV | Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal bones |
Health claims apply as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle; the pattern of use is one sachet a day.
Where does VH Life fit?
VH Life is a UK-made food supplement: one 11.8g berry sachet a day in cold water, with 87 active ingredients including 26 vitamins and minerals with declared amounts. It carries the claims above because it provides those nutrients at qualifying levels; it makes no claim beyond them. On subscription VH Life is £49.99 for 28 sachets every 4 weeks, which works out at £1.79 a day. There is also a 7-day trial (7 sachets, £12.99, one per customer) and one box of 14 sachets for £34.99, with free UK delivery. See the full label or the ingredients index.
If you take any medicine, ask your GP or pharmacist first. If you take warfarin, ask your anticoagulant clinic first: the sachet contains vitamin K, cranberry, co-enzyme Q10, ginkgo, turmeric and ginseng.
Questions people also ask
Is there a calcium claim for post-menopausal women?
Yes, but not for VH Life. Calcium helps to reduce the loss of bone mineral in post-menopausal women. Low bone mineral density is a risk factor for osteoporotic bone fractures. That claim applies only to foods with at least 400mg of calcium per portion, is intended for women 50 and over, and the benefit is obtained with at least 1,200mg a day from all sources. A VH Life sachet provides 164mg.
Is VH Life a calcium supplement?
No. A sachet provides 164mg of calcium, 20.5% of the NRV. That is enough to carry the authorised calcium claims, not enough to replace calcium-rich food or a prescribed supplement.
How much vitamin D is in VH Life?
62.5µg (2,500 IU) per sachet, as printed on the box. The NHS says adults should not take more than 100µg a day from all sources.
Does vitamin K2 matter for bones?
The register lists vitamin K without distinguishing K1 and K2; the claim is that vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. VH Life declares 30µg of vitamin K1 and names vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7) on the box.
