What is the best supplement for eyes?
Vitamin A, riboflavin and zinc are the three in VH Life with an authorised claim; each contribute to the maintenance of normal vision. DHA, an omega-3 fat, carries the same claim, and VH Life contains no omega-3. A VH Life sachet provides vitamin A (900µg, 112.5% NRV), riboflavin (1.4mg, 100% NRV) and zinc (15mg, 150% NRV). Lutein, astaxanthin and bilberry, the usual 'eye' ingredients, have no authorised GB claim; VH Life contains astaxanthin and blueberry and makes no claim for them. Nothing here replaces an eye test.
What does the NHS say?
The NHS says vitamin A helps vision in dim light and that adults need 700µg (men) or 600µg (women) a day. It says more than an average of 1,500µg a day over many years may affect your bones, and that women past the menopause and older men should avoid more than 1,500µg a day from food and supplements. Which authorised claims come closest?
In Great Britain a food or supplement may only make health claims that are on the GB register, worded as registered, for nutrients at 15% of the NRV or more per portion. These are the registered claims that touch this question and apply to VH Life:
| Nutrient, in one sachet | Authorised claim, as registered |
|---|---|
| Riboflavin, 1.4mg, 100% NRV | Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal vision |
| Vitamin A, 900µg, 112.5% NRV | Vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal vision |
| Zinc, 15mg, 150% NRV | Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal vision |
Health claims apply as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle; the pattern of use is one sachet a day.
Where does VH Life fit?
VH Life is a UK-made food supplement: one 11.8g berry sachet a day in cold water, with 87 active ingredients including 26 vitamins and minerals with declared amounts. It carries the claims above because it provides those nutrients at qualifying levels; it makes no claim beyond them. On subscription VH Life is £49.99 for 28 sachets every 4 weeks, which works out at £1.79 a day. There is also a 7-day trial (7 sachets, £12.99, one per customer) and one box of 14 sachets for £34.99, with free UK delivery. See the full label or the ingredients index.
If you take any medicine, ask your GP or pharmacist first. If you take warfarin, ask your anticoagulant clinic first: the sachet contains vitamin K, cranberry, co-enzyme Q10, ginkgo, turmeric and ginseng.
Questions people also ask
Does astaxanthin help eyes?
Astaxanthin has no authorised GB health claim. VH Life contains Haematococcus pluvialis algae powder standardised to 3% astaxanthin, named on the box without an amount, and makes no claim for it.
Which vitamin is the vision vitamin?
Vitamin A, riboflavin and zinc each carry the authorised claim of contributing to the maintenance of normal vision.
How much vitamin A is safe?
The NHS says women past the menopause and older men should avoid more than 1,500µg a day from food and supplements. A VH Life sachet provides 900µg, so add up the rest of your diet. Women who are pregnant or trying for a baby should avoid vitamin A supplements, and VH Life is not for pregnant women.
